MATCH V CHRIST’S  3 AUGUST 2017  at EAST BERKSHIRE GC

DRAWN 3 ALL

This was the fourth match versus our close rivals, Christ’s, and proved to be the tightest result. The venue was East Berkshire GC, just south of the M4 in Crowthorne, a tight course with long, narrow fairways, made more difficult by a multitude of heather, ditches and bunkers.

In the morning, 7 Fitz and 5 opposition players made up three four-man scramble teams, won by the combined squad of Stuart Lester and Pete Bennett of Fitz and Tony Price and Robert Barnes of Christ’s.

Despite being weighed down by a full Roast Beef and Yorkshire/Apple Crumble lunch, the 12 from each team then played 6 better ball stableford matches over 18 holes. Results in each match were emphatic in every case, ranging from 6 & 4 to 3 & 2. Winners for Fitz were Stuart Lester/ Brian Hodge, Ian Rosser/ Pete Bennett and Mike Hamment/Graham May. Apart from the last pair, the club’s ‘youth policy’ is obviously paying dividends!

Nearest the Pin on 2 holes, with the other two par 3’s proving too difficult for all 12 players, was won by the remarkably accurate Ian Cox. The Longest Drive on the 11th was taken by Ken Warwick (Christ’s).

The drawn result means that Fitz lead the series of matches 2 ½ to 1 ½. Christ’s captain for the day, Chris Garden, presented the prizes supported by the Fitz Match Organiser, Graham May. Mike Hamment as Fitz Captain gave a vote of thanks.
