Captain’s Trip to Dorset 2017

Parkstone 22 May

This was a marvelous tag-on to our Dorset trip for the nine of us who played with Rob Wood and his friends / fellow members at Parkstone (Jeremy and Alan). Thanks very much to Rob for organising our day - and to Jeremy and Alan for also playing with us.

All agreed that it was an excellent course - it is in the top 100 in the UK - and we played on a lovely sunny day. The course is quite undulating and is tree lined - but as it is on heathland, there is a lot of heather on the course! The greens were in very good condition. Golf doesn't get much better than this!

Well played Jeremy and Bob for winning the pairs competition - and well played Richard Baker for winning all of the other prizes! Can you give the rest of us a chance next time please, Richard?!

Broadstone 23 May

Broadstone GC had given us a discounted voucher for up to 16 players, after playing here last Summer. In the end we had 14 players at Broadstone. This is another top 100 course in the UK - it is probably more challenging than Parkstone - and you feel much more out in the countryside than at Parkstone.

It has a number of excellently shaped holes - and one very quirky one - the 7th! We decided to play for double points on that hole - you certainly do well to score any points there - and you need a sit down afterwards! Most thought that the course was not in such good condition as Parkstone - especially the greens which are still not quite right - although they did play mostly true. Brian Smith was again our winner here - winning on countback from Pete Bennett. Well done Brian! But the handicap committee will be meeting at the start of the Wirral tour - to consider a 2 shot handicap cut for Brian at future Fitz events!

Overall the mini tour was a great success - most stayed for one night at the welcoming and good value, Kings Head in Wimborne. Some good golf was played by all - although not all of the time unfortunately! And we will probably repeat the Captain's day out / mini tour next year - as a central part of our Fitz golf schedule - especially as some of our traditional matches seem to be struggling due to opposition numbers seemingly dwindling.
