Harpenden Mencap Day 29 June 2018

The Society again entered two teams in the Harpenden Mencap Day which, together with a Mornie Onions Team, meant that Fitzwilliam were again very well represented at this annual event at Harpenden Common GC. As a result of the recent wonderful sunny weather the ball tended to run far and bounce in all directions on the fairways but the greens were in excellent condition. This year the day was so hot and sunny that it reminded several of us of a similar afternoon at the Gog Magog Golf Course in the glorious summer of 1976.

The two Fitzwilliam Teams comprised of: Fitzwilliam I - Mike Hamment (capt), Richard Baker, Ian Hall and Charlie Brown; Fitzwilliam II - Colin Dunkerley (capt), Russel Chapman, Henry Croft-Baker and Bob Barltrop.

The competition format was as usual a fairly relaxed best three scores out of four but, all though all Fitz players put in respectable scores, we were no match for the eventual winners who had accumulated some 15 more points.

The teams, who were joined by some of their wives, enjoyed another excellent evening of dinner and charity auction etc and a very good sum of money was raised for the Harpenden Mencap Charity.

Next year is the 60th anniversary of the charity and they have set themselves the very ambitious target of raising £60,000 during the year so hopefully the Fitzwilliam Golf Society will be able to do its bit and hopefully raise more than two teams.
