Fitz Open 7 September 2018

We returned to Gog Magog GC for the eighth annual Fitz Golf Open, playing the Old Course. 28 Fitzwilliam Alumni entered with several players travelling some distance to take part.

The day began with the traditional putting competition won by local member, Brian Smith with 16 putts over 9 holes.

The course’s green fairways provided a welcome change after the hot summer. Lush rough in places caused more than a few lost balls.  Play started in bright and breezy conditions but the wind rose during the course of the afternoon, making play more difficult resulting in generally low scores across the board. Points scored on the back nine were noticeably lower.

The outcome was very close indeed. The top 16 players were separated by only four stableford points. The top three all scored 33 points so it was necessary to revert to countback over the last nine holes to separate them. Narrowly beaten into third place was Alan Wood with Richard Newport in second place.

The very popular winner, with 15 points on the back nine, was our Captain, Mike Hamment who became the Fitzwilliam Champion Golfer for 2018.

Fourth place was taken by John Uwins, fifth by Graham May and sixth by Michael Hall. The top 6 players will be invited to represent Fitz in the Inter College Alumni tournament next April.

The players moved to Fitzwilliam College for Dinner and presentations. The golfers were shocked to learn that draught bitter was no longer served in the College Bar but recovered sufficiently to enjoy an excellent Dinner in the Old SCR. Grace was said by the Reverend John Beer and the menu comprised herb-seared tuna, rack of lamb and Summer pudding.

After Dinner, prizes were awarded. Last year’s champion, Mike Sellers awarded the Croft-Baker Trophy to Mike Hamment to enthusiastic applause. The Secretary, Colin Dunkerley, then gave a Report on the Society’s recent activities and proposed future fixtures, concluding by proposing a toast to Fitzwilliam Golf Society.

Golfers retired to the bar to conclude the evening.
