Fitzwilliam Open Weekend, Day 2 - Saturday 8 September
The “Morning After” round was a relaxed competition at The Cambridgeshire. This was a new venue for the Society but is handily placed about 10 minutes from College.
After staying overnight in Fitzwilliam and a solid breakfast to steady the constitution, 15 players took part. The format was betterball stableford. The previous day’s wind had dropped but there was light rain for the first nine holes. Steams criss-crossing the course caught quite a few unsuspecting drives.
Clearly unaffected by the previous night’s revelry, Alan Wood and Mike Sellers took equal turns to score well and stormed to victory with an astonishing 47 points. Michael Hall and Bob Barltrop took second place with a very respectable 41 points. Richard Newport and Graham May took third place on 40 points, narrowly beating Pete Bennett and new Champion, Mike Hamment on countback.
Presentations were made after a sandwich lunch.
