Team Invitation Day 15 May 2019 – Mid Herts GC
This new event replaced the two Threeway matches played in previous years. Hosted by Fitz, pairs took part from St Peter’s (Oxford), CU Land Society, Johns and Jesus. The format was a pairs betterball stableford competition with prizes for the best scoring pairs but with an overall three team competition between St Peters, Fitz and the Rest of Cambridge.
The venue was Mid Herts Golf Club, north of St Albans, the Secretary’s home club and one of few that will allow a two tee start. This helped get the 28 players started (and finished) within a short time of each other and prevented long waits for early and late starters.
The start of the day was marred by traffic problems for those approaching from London and the South with both the M25 and North Circular closed. Several players arrived only just in time to tee off while two never made it at all! On the positive side, we were blessed with glorious weather and cloudless skies and a course in good condition despite the severe lack of Spring rain.
On the course, there was some excellent scoring. The Jesus pair of Rod Cowper and Adam Stone took first prize with an excellent 43 points, narrowly beating the St Peter’s pair of John Payne-Cook and Richard Dent (guesting) with 42. Paul Richards and Ron Jenkins of St Peter’s claimed third place with 41 points, one better than the best placed Fitz pair of Mike Hamment and Brian Smith.
In the team competition, St Peter’s triumphed with an average across their three pairs of 39.66 points, comfortably ahead of the Rest of Cambridge with Fitzwilliam sadly pushed into third place.
Prizes were presented by the Match Organiser, Colin Dunkerley, after an excellent two course sit down meal.
It is intended to repeat the pairs invitation day next year with Berkhamsted GC booked for June 2020. We need 36 players to secure a two tee start!
