Harpenden Mencap Day - 28 June 2019

The Society again entered two teams of four in the Harpenden Mencap Charity Golf Day.

Together with a Mornie Onions led by Tournament Organiser, Matt Hignell, Fitzwilliam were, as always, very well represented at this annual tournament at Harpenden Common GC. As has become expected at this event the sun shone brightly all afternoon which, together with the excellent condition of the course and the fast greens, ensured that everyone had a most enjoyable afternoon.

The two Fitzwilliam Teams comprised: Fitzwilliam I - Colin Dunkerley (capt), Mike Hamment, Dave Castell and Brian Smith and; Fitzwilliam II - Bob Barltrop (capt), Charlie Brown, Alastair Sharp and Robin Winckless who had gallantly stepped in at the eleventh hour to fill an unexpected vacancy.

The competition format was as usual a fairly relaxed best three scores out of four. The Fitz 1 team put in a very good score of 109 points which placed them near the top of the leader board. The Mornie Onions team came third on countback with 114 points, although nowhere close to the eventual winners, The Cockney Dagenham Boys, who were essentially the in-house catering team, who scored a magnificent 130 points. Clearly, local knowledge was important. Unfortunately, Fitz 2 failed to get going and were well down the field with 84 points.

The teams, who were joined later by some of their wives, enjoyed another excellent evening dinner and charity auction etc and were all delighted to hear that the event had raised some £7,500 for the Harpenden Mencap Charity.

Hopefully next year we will be able to raise that elusive third team.

Thanks go to our match organiser, Bob Barltrop.
