Christ’s win tight contest at Camberley Heath GC - 8 August 2019
Fitz took on their great rivals Christ’s in the annual highly competitive match. The excellent Camberley Heath course, as the name suggests, provided a tough challenge for all on the lush, rolling heathland terrain. All six matches were tighter than usual, with three of the battles going down to the tricky 18th. Christ’s eventually won by 4 points to 2 in the fourball pairs, including two drawn matches.
Last minute shortfalls in the Christ’s team meant that Tim Sullivan was lent by Fitz in the moment of need and in honour of ‘transfer deadline day’! He had one job, i.e. to sabotage the other team, but managed an honourable half (gallantly accompanying a lady partner of one of their team also drafted in on the day).
Prizes for best scoring Fitz pair went to Matt Hignell and Andrew Garden (winning 4&2), whilst Paul Main and Alan Darlington won the equivalent prize for Christ’s. Other Fitz individual prize winners were:
-
Nearest Pin – 14th Bryan Pickup
-
Longest drive nearest lake without going in - 16th John Uwins
-
Best Dressed – Tim ‘Hollywood’ Sullivan
All 24 players enjoyed the match, and the 4pm late lunch in the grand clubhouse. Plans were made for next year’s event to continue the rivalry, probably at nearby Bramley GC in 365 days.
This is only the second time that Fitz has lost this match since it was first contested in 2014. Fitz now lead the series 3.5 - 2.5.
