Season Opener, West Surrey GC – Thursday 30 March 2023

The new Captain, Brian Smith, welcomed 15 players for our first event of 2023, held at West Surrey Golf Club at the end of March. We were fortunate, after a very wet month, to have a pleasant day, with some sunshine and just a brief shower.

 

Set on the edge of the Surrey Hills, the course is very attractive, with some lovely views, most notably from the 18th tee looking down over the clubhouse to the Hog’s Back in the distance. It has a lot of bunkers, some of which are quite deep, as several of us found to our cost!

 

There was a team competition in groups of 3, with two scores counting on each hole. The winners, with an excellent score of 87, were Alan Wood, David Williams and Graham May. Second with 80 points were Bryan Pickup, Danny Gesua and Nigel Smethers. The best individual score on the day was Graham May with 41 points, closely followed by Mike Hamment with 40 points and Nigel Smethers on 39 points.

 

The nearest the pin prizes were won by Alan Wood and Graham May, with Alan also winning the longest drive on the 18th. Nearest the pin in 2 on the 15th was won by Harry Coe.

 

The day concluded with an excellent meal. A great venue to start the 2023 season, and we knew we had been fortunate to play that day when heavy overnight rain led to the closure of the course for the next two days.
