Society Day at Aldwickbury GC – Wednesday 26 April
13 Fitz GS members and 5 guests played in dry conditions on a challenging and fairly hilly course at Aldwickbury Park, Harpenden with fast, true and very tricky greens. The guests showed us the way with Dave Humphreys (guest of Alan Wood) winning on countback from Peter Galpin (guest of Mike Hamment), both on 35. Mike Hamment himself led the Fitz also-rans on 33, beating Dave Castell on countback. The nearest-the-pin prizes were won by Mike Hall on the 3rd, and by Martin Roland (Brian Smith’s guest) on the 17th, with Tom Williams (Dave’s son guesting) winning the longest drive at the 10th.
A separate member and guest pairs better-ball prize was left to a coin toss at the post-game dinner to decide whether the game would be decided on the front, back, odd, or even nine holes. Had the coins fallen differently then Dave and Tom Williams would have won by a convincing margin with 24 points on either the front nine or the even holes score. As it was, the score that counted was the back nine, for which we had two teams tied on 21 points. An executive decision determined that the prizes went to Alan Wood and Dave Humphreys, on the basis that they had only one person having already won a prize whilst Mike Hamment and Peter Galpin had both already gained rewards! Mike, our esteemed President, may have been a little hard done by in that decision – but such are the sacrifices which have to come with high office!
Lynn Newport was the only guest not amongst the prizes, mainly due to being too consistent with partner Richard – it was the inconsistent pairs who had the highest scores in each 9-hole category! Consolation golf balls were received by Matt Hignell and myself for bringing on the lowest scores whilst not being amongst the prizes. I wouldn’t like to say who was lower of those two, suffice it to suggest that organising the day had clearly taken its toll on me!
We look forward to next year’s event at Ellesborough, near Aylesbury in April 2024, where they have offered us an excellent price due to their having to cancel our original booking for this year.
