Mike Hamment completes his final Munro ascent
On Saturday 27 May, our President, Mike Hamment, finally completed his mammoth adventure of climbing all 284 Munros – Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet. As is the tradition when climbing the last Munro, all those who have climbed a Munro with him over the years, plus others, are invited to join him for his “last” climb.
And so it was that some 40 friends and family joined Mike, resplendent in his kilt, at the foot of Cairnwell at lunchtime on 27 May for the climb to the summit. As always Mike was full of energy when he reached the summit (Mike had deliberately left one of the easiest Munros to last for the benefit of the not so fit and able) where he was greeted by a piper and champagne.
A celebration dinner was held at the local golf course (where else?) that evening. There were five Fitzbilly boys who joined Mike on this momentous occasion and not surprisingly all are members of the Fitzwilliam Golf Society.
Apart from the kudos, the only other benefit for having climbed all 284 Munros is a tie which one has to apply, and pay, for! So, a proper trophy was made and presented to Mike on this very special occasion.
Fitzwilliam Golf Society congratulates Mike on his great achievement.
