Fitz avenges Christ’s at Burnham Beeches - 18 August 2023.

After a barren spell, Fitz GS awoke from a Slough of despondency to defeat Christ’s at nearby Burnham. With seven fourball matches being closely fought, Fitz were eventually victors 4 ½ to 2 ½. The majority of matches were decided on the last hole.

The course is over 100 years old and benefits from having a large number of mature trees in a beautiful setting on the edge of the historic Burnham Beeches woodland. The threatened heavy rains stayed away, and the playing conditions were excellent. Matches were speedy and most players were round in four hours, perhaps enticed by the prospect of excellent Rebellion IPA in the clubhouse and outdoor table area.

Prizes for best scoring Fitz pair went to best ‘buggies’ Nigel Smethers and Danny Gesua, whilst Chris Garden and Mick McGuire won the equivalent for the opposition. In form Johnny Phillips smote the longest drive on the 18th and was nearest the pin on two other holes. Christ’s captain Chris Garden declined to let Johnny take home those additional prizes (framed prints), in the current desire for diversity, and so the three nearest the pin winners were Fitz Captain Brian Smith, Bryan Pickup and Martin Dinkele.

The dinner comprised an excelled roast pork followed by crumble. As hosts, Christ’s captain Chris handed out the prizes, with a response from his oppo Brian Smith. Brian is obviously benefiting from the ‘new captain bounce’, but promised Christ’s an opportunity for revenge at East Herts GC in 12 months’ time.
