Match v St John's and St Peter's Colleges - 3 October 2018
Porters Park GC. Fitz Won 3-2
St John’s may have won University Challenge earlier this year, and St Peter’s youngsters impressed Paxman earlier in the week, but Fitz proved that brawn can beat brains any time on the golf course. The venue was Porters Park GC, a leafy oasis in Radlett, a challenging course with strategically placed ditches and slick, tricky greens.
In the morning 9 hole warm-up, Colin Dunkerley from Fitz combined with Johnians, Duncan Moore Rob Brown and Bill Blyth, to win the prizes. Fortified by slow cooked Roast Beef and Yorkshire Puddings the size of bunkers, the 10 from Fitz went up against 8 from St John’s and 2 from St Peter’s in 5 better ball paired matches over 18 holes. Results in each match were varied, with best scoring in a 5 & 3 victory for Fitz pair David Williams/Graham May and a 3 & 2 win for Johnians David Lynas/Robert Ross. Close wins for Stuart Lester/Richard Newport and Pete Bennett/Michael Hall saw Fitz over the line.
Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive also went to the good guys, for the two Mike’s, Hamment and Hall, respectively. St John’s captain, Duncan Moore, had dusted off the generous prizes from the depths of his wine cellar, whilst Mike Hamment as Fitz Captain gave a vote of thanks and apologies for again mopping up all the prizes.
